MNEMONCS: A system for remembering

Welcome to Stuy Cubed, a website dedicated to the Mnemonics public art project at Stuyvesant, a.k.a. the "Memory Cubes." 

Mnemonics, a collaborative project by artists Kristin Jones and Andrew Ginzel, was commissioned by The Battery Park City Authority in conjunction with The Percent for Art Program of the City of New York, Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York City Department of Education. 

Mnemonics, installed in 1992, an ongoing project, is dedicated to cherishing specific moments in time at Stuyvesant, and sparking curiosity about the world beyond. The work is made up of over 400 clear glass blocks that house fragments of history, both from the school and from the world. To contain and trigger the memories of graduating classes, the artists created 88 cubes with assemblages of artifacts donated by alumni, and also provided an equal number of empty blocks to be completed by future classes until 2080 when the all the blocks will be filled. 

This website, Stuy Cubed, is an invitation to current students, faculty, and alumni to experience and contribute to the history of Stuyvesant. The site contains information on the contents of the cubes and their origins, and will lead to instructions for filling the empty blocks. Mnemonics gives each graduating class the chance to ask, 'what is worthy of remembrance?'
